A lot of research in thermofluids engineering is the improvement of energy systems. Convective heat transfer research is being carried by means of advanced experimental and numerical techniques. As well, there is research on improving the efficiency and environmental impact of energy technologies. This includes cogeneration, district energy, and thermal energy storage. Electricity generation by means of conventional (petroleum, nuclear) and alternative (solar energy and fuel cell) techniques is also being explored.
Another area of thermofluids engineering research is in the aerospace industry, where they are developing innovative solutions to the unique problems of heat transfer in a low-pressure environment, and fluidity in a low-gravity and low-temperature environment.
