Veterinary Science Programs, Courses, Schools and Degrees in Alberta Universities
What is Veterinary Science?Veterinary science is a professional program that prepares students for careers in the care and medical treatment of animals.
What do Veterinary Science students learn?Veterinary science undergraduate students usually pursue two-year “pre-veterinary” programs either specifically labeled as such, or (because entrance to veterinary schools is so competitive) they have the option to then complete two more years to obtain B.Sc. or B.Sc. (Agr) degrees in disciplines such as animal and poultry science, biology, chemistry or aquaculture. Those wishing to apply to veterinary colleges in Canada generally need undergraduate courses in biology (including genetics and microbiology), chemistry (including organic chemistry), English, mathematics (including statistics), physics, and the humanities and social sciences. Each student should pay careful attention to such prerequisites if they are interested in careers as veterinarians or veterinary scientists. In addition to the above courses, pre-veterinary degrees usually incorporate a great deal of hands-on experience working with animals and in veterinary clinics. This experience is invaluable when applying to veterinary college.More information about Veterinary Science
