Water Resources Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

Research in water resources engineering focuses on two major areas: Hydraulics and hydrology.

Research in hydraulics involves both modeling and the building of models. Current projects include building culverts for fish passage, development of spillways, as well as the modeling of river ice processes.

Research in hydrology involves the development and application of models for predicting runoff from watersheds. Current research involves the investigation of climate change impact on water resources, such as drought frequency and climate trends.

Another area of research is in the restoration of water habitats that have been previously damaged through mining, forestry, road building, or other human activities. These activities are generally done in collaboration with environmental engineers, biologists, and environmental scientists.

New ways of building wastewater facilities are being investigated that are economical while at the same time minimally impacting the environment. This includes the use of materials that are longer-lived and resistant to water damage, incorporating robotics and automated machinery, and installing monitoring and detection systems.
