Studying Water Resources Engineering in Canada

Foundation courses in engineering are taught to first-year students, including chemistry, calculus, programming, fluid dynamics, engineering mechanics and analysis, and physics.

Other courses specific to water resources engineering include hydraulics, surveying, and chlorination. Students learn about the hydraulic operation of municipal water distribution systems, industrial water delivery systems, wastewater collection systems, and municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment systems. They also learn about basic surveying principles. Hypo-chlorination and gas chlorination as a means of disinfection are also taught.

Water and wastewater technology courses are available for those who wish to specialize. They learn about the microbiology of water and wastewater, qualitative chemical analysis, wastewater treatment, water distribution, and process control theory.

Additional topics covered include environmental law and how it applies to water resources management, water economics (supply and demand of water), and statistics (sampling strategies and hypothesis testing).

Most courses are run with a laboratory component, which allows the student to apply their classroom knowledge to practical applications. Field trips to water treatment plants, dam facilities, and water reclamation areas are offered as well.
