UVic Helps to Found Six New Companies

The University of Victoria’s technology transfer office is celebrating the launch of six new spin-off companies.

The Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC) is the link between the university’s researchers, their inventions and innovations, and the marketplace. Its mandate is to move research into the public and private sectors through partnerships, licensing of technologies, and the formation of new spin-off companies. The six new IDC associated companies which were started in the 2004/2005 fiscal year are:

6th Dimension Devices Inc. (www.6dd.ca) creates precision sports testing equipment, software and training programs for athletes.

CARMS Inc. (carms.geog.uvic.ca) uses remote sensing—a technique for collecting information about an object without coming into physical contact with it—to delve into the health of B.C.’s environment.

Sensific Technologies Inc. (no website available) develops innovative electrochemical sensor technologies suitable for measuring chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, total chlorine, pH, and temperature) in solutions.

Feste Learning Inc. (ise.uvic.ca) It’s goal is to inspire a love of literary works in a world-wide audience. To do so, Feste will create and publish works from a variety of recognized leaders in an Internet-friendly form.

Green Building Exchange Inc. (www.greenbex.com/public/index.html) is a business-to-business Internet portal connecting buyers and sellers of sustainable, environmentally friendly, green construction materials.

Inspired Devices Inc. (web.uvic.ca/uvatt) delivers innovative solutions to people with disabilities. It commercializes technologies developed by the University of Victoria’s Assistive Technologies Team.

Since 1992, IDC has helped found 37 new companies, based on UVic research or UVic student entrepreneurial initiatives. These include B.C. businesses producing vaccine and diagnostic solutions for aquaculture, secure electronic forms, environmentally safe herbicides, laboratory information management systems, and market research for e-commerce platforms.
