Chemical Physics Research Areas and Disciplines

Many chemical physicists are working on theoretical and computational studies of molecular photochemistry and laser control. Recently, it has become possible to tailor laser fields to control chemical processes. This has implications for quantum computing, where tailored laser fields can be used for implementing quantum gate operations and increasing computing power.

There are also advances in improving current techniques for analyzing molecules, such as NMR spectroscopy. Traditionally, high-resolution NMR studies have been confined to liquid sample for various technical reasons; however scientists are overcoming these obstacles and using NMR to investigate solid materials. Other current projects include the development of new solid-state NMR techniques such as pulse programs and techniques to allow the analysis of complex NMR spectra.

There is also research ongoing which focuses on the chemical physics of biology. Current research focuses on developing an understanding of the physical properties of polymers, biopolymers, and bacterial cells at surfaces and in thin films. Studies include bacterial adhesion, biofilms, and properties of individual bacterial cells on surfaces; proteins, peptides and enzymes at surfaces; and polysaccharide nanoparticles for use in industrial and biomedical applications. Recent experiments in collaboration with materials chemists have led to biomaterials such as polysaccharide nanoparticles, which show great promise as a platform technology for industrial and biomedical applications.
