Studying Theoretical Physics in Canada

A theoretical or mathematical physics program emphasizes interdisciplinary investigations of the mathematical and physical aspects of theories and mathematical models used in physics. The programs are designed to provide a broad background in astrophysics, atmospheric physics, atomic physics, condensed matter and surface physics, elementary particle physics, mathematical physics, classical and quantum gravity, plasma physics, and statistical physics.

Students study wave motion and optics, electromagnetism, elements of quantum mechanics, and advanced dynamics. They also investigate modern physics such as special relativity, kinetic theory, semiconductors, atomic energy states, lasers, X-rays, and thermodynamics.

Mathematical physics involves a lot of calculus so students must be proficient in this subject before pursuing theoretical and mathematical physics. Specific topics in mathematical physics include boundary value problems, spherical harmonics, Bessel functions, and Green's functions. They also study computational physics. This includes the computational methods used in the analysis of experimental data, such as probability and random variables, Monte Carlo methods for the simulation of random processes, and statistical methods for parameter estimation and hypothesis tests.

Computer simulations are an important part of mathematical physics studies. Students learn how to develop fast and accurate algorithms for solving a wide variety of problems on computers. See the article on applied mathematics for more information.
