BC School of Art Therapy is a private educational institution accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia. The school is also a registered charity and non-profit society. The focus is on quality art therapy graduate level training with theory and practical instruction in a clinical setting.
Two main courses, a two-year post-bachelor’s Diploma in Art Therapy and a 15 month post-master’s Certificate in Art Therapy are offered. These programs are also offered as weekend intensive courses, stretching to three or four years for employed students and are identical to the master’s degree courses with theory, practice and a thesis for diploma students. The part-time courses are diploma programs while the certificate programs offer specialization in the basics of art therapy for clinicians with masters’ degrees. These programs lay the foundation to enable students practice art therapy and also enhance clinical skills. To be eligible, students require a foundation in psychology, counseling and the fine arts. They are then taught a variety of therapies so that they can practice the one that suits their style best.
The main curriculum has courses in the theories of art therapy, a combination of art and psychopathology, and the application of art therapy with children, adolescents, and families.
Also offered are year round short courses for the public aimed at personal and professional development.
