Profile of Career College/Trade School

Island Career Academy, Sydney, Nova Scotia is a private career college registered with the Nova Scotia Department of Education Private College Division. It is a trade name of Johnston and Johnston Consultants Limited, who have been providing occupational training since 1987. The Island Career Academy houses 2 computer labs with 12 to 20 workstations, 5 classrooms, a health care lab and a full-time licensed child care centre.

The Island Career Academy offers full-time training in technology and human resources. It offers programs in Business Administration [42 weeks], Paralegal/Legal Assistant [42 weeks duration], in Information Technology [44 weeks] such as Computer Programming and Internet Development, Early Childhood Education, Continuing Care Assistant [28 weeks], Community Residential Worker [40 weeks], and Child and Youth Care Counseling [44 weeks].

It offers various programs with part-time training such as bookkeeping/accounting, word processing, Canadian Red Cross CPR/First Aid training, WHMIS, Non Violent Crises Intervention, and Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care. Each of its students is offered lifetime placement services. Because the class sizes are small and there are individual workstations, students tend to get trained better.

The Island Career Academy offers student services such as tutorial services to help those who have difficulty in coping with the training provided. On-the-job training is provided to all students who complete the programs, and financial aid is available to the students who qualify. Students have to have a Grade 12 certificate or have a mature student status.
