What is Anthropology?

Anthropology is the study of the cultural and biological structures of humanity. A child of the natural sciences that is now grouped with the humanities, it includes four distinct areas of study: Physical Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, Archaeology, and Socio-cultural Anthropology. (For a good, concise definition of these areas, go here:
http://www.arts.smu.ca/anthropology/what_is_anthropology.aspx). Through their work, anthropologists seek to understand and broaden the definition of what it means to be human.

What do Anthropology students learn?

Anthropology is often closely tied to sociology in that its scope includes the cultural and social aspects of humanity. As noted above, this discipline is more deeply divided into distinct categories, each of which has its own requirements. However, beyond the specific subject matter, students would expect to learn and apply report writing and research techniques, the gathering of data for statistical analysis, and would gain a broader understanding of human interaction. Many students choose a particular culture or ethnic group upon which to focus their studies, or a particular feature of humanity (e.g gender relations) that is an aspect of all cultures.
