What is Contemporary Studies?Contemporary studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses attention on the thought, culture, events and trends of recent times (usually the 19th and 20th centuries).
What do Contemporary Studies students learn?Most arts-based contemporary studies majors study a wide range of topics, from post-colonial literature to feminist theory. Courses are drawn from various disciplines including literature, history, political science, economics, psychology, science and technology, philosophy and sociology. Some programs, such as the one offered by Simon Fraser University, focuses more on the fine arts and cultural studies. Others offer B.Sc. degrees with an emphasis on recent developments in science and technology, and the issues those developments raise. All graduates of contemporary studies programs learn to make sound judgments based on evidence and facts, to present arguments logically, and to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
