What is Folklore and Ethnology?

Folklore is the popular culture of a people passed on through mostly oral traditions – its tales and legends, its customs and beliefs, its music, dance, drama, vernacular architecture, material culture, food, home medicine and folk wisdom. In other words, it encompasses the non-institutionalized aspects of culture, the culture, for want of a better term, of the “common people.” A more detailed description of ethnology and folklore studies may be found here: http://cfs.osu.edu/aboutFolklore/aboutmiddle.html

What do Folklore and Ethnology students learn?

Many cultural studies, anthropology and literature departments offer courses in folklore and ethnology, but there are few universities in Canada that offer specific degrees in folklore. These tend to be interdisciplinary programs that combine courses in folklore with those from closely related departments such as English (or the relevant language of study), anthropology, history, art history, music or sociology. Students of folklore conduct field research in their work of recording and preserving folk culture; thus they develop skills in researching, in working with the public, and in writing and communicating their findings to others.
