Employment Resources and Professions Available to Geological Engineering Graduates

Resource exploration companies employ many geological engineers to help find and exploit valuable resources. These include explorations for oil and gas in Western Canada, the Arctic and off the East Coast; uranium in Saskatchewan; tar sands in Alberta; coal in the Rocky Mountains and Maritimes; and geothermal energy in British Columbia.

They also work as reservoir engineers, pit engineers and mine geologists in the production of these resources. Other important issues connected with these resources are the safety of the facilities in the event of earthquakes and other natural disasters. As well, geological engineers work with other engineers to manage pollution from the extraction processes of these resources.

Geological engineers can also be employed as construction consultants, environmental firms, and investigation teams. In these cases they work in teams with other engineers, geologists, lawyers, and businesspeople on specific projects.

Geological engineers are in great demand by the construction industry. They make sure that the rock and soil foundations for high rises, bridges, and tunnels are secure and stable. They often work with geotechnical and civil engineers to design solutions to geological issues such as landslides, earthquakes, permafrost, and avalanches.

A degree in geological engineering can also be used to acquire the professional engineering (P.Eng) designation. This allows geological engineers to sign off on legal documents for the building of mine shafts, tunnels, bridges, and roadways.
