Studying Horticulture and Horticultural in Canada

The typical horticultural program covers a broad spectrum of horticultural practices including plant propagation techniques, greenhouse floriculture production, nursery crop production, landscape design, landscape construction, and plant identification. Students learn about woody and herbaceous plants: their ecologies, physiologies, and current uses. They also learn about soil properties and which are suited for which plants, and how to maintain the soils for optimal plant growth and yield.

On the business side of things, students also learn about landscape design and the business behind horticultural operations. They learn the economics of horticultural operations and how to interact with commercial enterprises and also government agencies.

As well, pest and disease management, pruning techniques, and maintenance practices are investigated. Students take courses in entomology, parasitology, mycology, and microbiology in order to learn about the common pests and infections of horticulturally important plants. Special emphasis is placed on many aspects of sustainable horticultural practices, including integrated pest management and environmentally responsible greenhouse, nursery and landscape practices.

Horticulture programs include a great deal of hands-on learning, through the use of arboretums, greenhouses, visits to turf farms or orchards, and also laboratory work. Students get to put their theoretical knowledge to work during internships or co-operative education work placements.
