Zoology Topics and Concepts in Canadian Universities
What do Zoology Students Learn? There are very few institutions in Canada that offer B.Sc. degrees in zoology specifically; more often, students pursue a major in biology with a concentration in zoology courses. A broad grounding in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics is part of most programs. Within zoology, students may take courses in various subjects including comparative anatomy, cell structure, genetics, ecology, evolution, paleontology, physiology and animal behaviour. There is often a field component to research, particularly in upper level courses, though students also gain experience with using new technologies and approaches such as remote sensing, bioinformatics, and digital image analysis. Some institutions offer the opportunity to pursue a more environmentally oriented degree, combining zoology courses with others in botany, environmental science, or wildlife management. Cooperative degrees, combining academic study with paid work terms, are also offered by some universities.
