Canada MBA Entrance Examinations

The MBA application in Canada in most schools will require the applicant to submit a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score as part of their respective applications.

MBA Exams - GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS

Most MBA schools require that applicants submit a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score as part of their respective applications. The GMAT is a standardized, timed examination, taken in English, which tests those analytical writing, verbal, and mathematical skills which have been determined to be important in the study of management and which are believed to be a reliable determinant of the applicant's chances for success in the first year of studies at the graduate level of management studies. In Canada, the average required GMAT score is 550, ranging from 500 to over 600, and the average score of MBA students is 606. However, the schools regarded as being in the upper echelons of management education tend to have a student body with an average GMAT of over 640. It may increase one's chances for admission if an applicant is to achieve a score that is closer to or exceeds the average of the school to which he/she is applying rather than its minimum. The applicant's GMAT score is to be sent directly by the institution at which the applicant took the test to the school to which one is applying, usually its Office of the Registrar, who then evaluates the score according to its own criteria.

International students who acquired their respective education in institutions where English was not the primary language of instruction will be required to take a test examining their respective abilities to use and understand English from a verbal and written, and sometimes read, perspective as used in a post-secondary setting. The standard examination for this purpose is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which may be taken at various locations around the world. The TOEFL may be taken in one of three versions including as a paper-based, computer-based, or internet-based test. However, one should check with the school to which one wants to apply to make sure that the version of the TOEFL one prefers to take will be accepted as not all schools accept every variant. Moreover, the TOEFL score must be sent directly by the institution at which the test was taken to the school to which one wants to apply, usually its Office of the Registrar, which then evaluates the score according to its own criteria. In Canada, the required TOFEL score range from 550-600 (paper-based test), 213-250 (computer-based test), and 86-100 (internet-based test). The standard fee for a paper or computer based TOEFL test is, in US dollars, $140; the fee for the internet-based TOEFL depends on which country one is taking it; for instance, in Canada, the fee for this examination is $160 (Canadian dollars).

Some schools will allow the TOEFL test to be substituted with an equivalent examination. However, if an applicant wants to take an equivalent test, he/she must make sure that the school to which he/she will be applying to accepts the desired test's score. In Canada, any of three equivalent tests might be accepted including the CanTest, based out of the Second Language Institute at the University of Ottawa and offered at Ottawa and Toronto testing sites, International English Language Testing System (IELTS), based out of Consestoga College in Ontario and offered at Kitchener, Ottawa, and Toronto testing sites, and Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), based out of the English Language Institute at Michigan University and offered at testing sites in 8 Canadian provinces and 28 US states. Fees for the CanTest range from $40-$130, IELTS fees range from $245-$275, and MELAB fees range from $80-$120 (US dollars). As with the TOEFL, the score attained on one of the aforementioned equivalent tests must be sent directly by the institution at which the said examination was taken to the school to which one wants to apply.
