Employment Resources and Professions Available to Marine Biology Graduates

Many people with a marine biology degree end up working either in government or academia.

Those in academia usually have a teaching position where they teach biology or marine biology, while at the same time doing research. This research can sometimes be away from the institutions...research cruises are common for sample and other data collection.

Government employment includes that with the Canadian Coast Guard and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. As well, Canada has several marine institutes such as Bamfield Marine Sciences Center, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, and Canadian Rivers Institute. These centers all employ marine biologists in a variety of capacities.

As well, technical positions in aquaculture farms and private consulting firms are possible for marine biologists. They can also work in aquaria or museums working directly with animals or exhibits, or working with the public doing interpretive work.

An emerging trend is for marine biologists to be involved in the development and testing of new drugs based on marine organisms. These people can work in private biotechnology or pharmaceutical laboratories, or even in the hospital industry collaborating with microbiologists and pharmacologists.

A degree in marine biology can be used for further studies in veterinary medicine, medicine, or law.
