Prerequisites Needed to Study Marine Biology in Canada
Most marine biology programs in Canada are offered as graduate degrees only, with the expectation that the student will first acquire a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, usually biology with a concentration in marine biology. The admission requirements for undergraduate marine biology programs are usually similar to those of a general B.Sc. program; primarily, it is recommended that students have a strong background in biology and chemistry (physics is usually an option). Advanced math courses may be required at the high school level. As marine biology is a competitive program only offered by a few institutions in Canada, the minimum academic standards may not be sufficient to guarantee admission. SCUBA certification and boat handling experience are valuable skills.
