Studying Marine Biology in Canada

Students begin with a basic grounding in biology in their first years, and study in greater depth the diversity, ecology, physiology, and other aspects of marine animals and plants during later years. Students also take classes on the biology, chemistry, and physics of the ocean. Students learn about the physiology of marine animals, plants, and algae. Invertebrate biology classes are designed to teach the student about the diversity, ecology, and evolutionary history of the major invertebrate groups.

Students also take classes in aquaculture and fisheries science, where they learn about the farming of marine life for human use and its effects on the surrounding environment. See the article on aquaculture for more information.

Ecology courses are designed to teach about how marine life is inter-related and distributed throughout the oceans. Students learn about population distributions and how human activities have affected them. Shoreline, open-ocean, and benthic environments are also studied and compared.

Graduate students take additional courses depending on their field of specialization. Students attend and participate in mandatory seminars, and get the opportunity to learn about new advances in various topics in marine biology.

Hands-on experiences include laboratory studies on marine microbes and phytoplankton, indoor tank studies, and field studies. Field trips to marine and oceanographic institutes are common in both the undergraduate and graduate program curricula.
