Agricultural and Agriculture Research Areas and Disciplines

Much research into agricultural science is towards environmentally sustainable practices. Soil conservation is one such area: scientists are measuring the impacts of soil erosion and fertilizer, manure on soil quality and crop production. They are also studying the agronomic and environmental impacts of manure and sewage sludge on agricultural soils. This research is being used to improve soil management practices by calculating how much sewage sludge or manure can be safely applied to soils and by optimizing the use of fertilizer to improve crop production while avoiding environmental contamination.

Greenhouse gas emissions are also being studied. Scientists are studying the roles of agricultural and forest ecosystems in the control of greenhouse gases. They are also developing techniques to anticipate the impacts of climate change on agriculture and forestry so as better to plan for them. This research is being used to estimate how much greenhouse gas is emitted from agricultural ecosystems and how these emissions could be reduced.

There are collaborations between agricultural scientists those in biotechnology, genetic engineering, and farming, to develop crops better able to withstand environmental hardships such as drought or increased UV. New foods are being produced which have longer shelf lives, can be grown in a wider variety of climates, or have resistance to pests and infections (see articles on biotechnology, food science, and pest management). As well, animals are continually being bred for more food, milk, or wool. This is being accomplished via traditional breeding methods, and also via gene-splicing, cloning, and other genetic manipulations. For example, human growth hormone (used to treat children with growth problems) is now being produced in the milk of certain dairy cows, in order to meet the demand that traditional sources (human cadavers) cannot meet.
