What do Animal and Poultry Science Students Learn?

Animal science programs offer a science-based degree with emphasis on the genetics and reproduction, nutrition, management and physiology of livestock and birds. Students also take courses in biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, statistics, microbiology, ethics, sustainable agriculture, environmental science, plant science, soil science and agricultural and world market economics. Depending on the breadth of the program, research and teaching may be extended to topics such as animal welfare and animal/environment interactions, aquaculture and the care of pets, wildlife and zoo animals.

Be aware that some institutions offer two related programs: Animal Biology (B.Sc.) and Animal Science (B.Sc.Agr.). Both are practical degrees, but the first emphasizes the science underlying the care of animals, while the second emphasizes livestock production in the context of the agricultural industry. Prospective students should be aware of this distinction and research the differing paths carefully, especially as they regard future careers. For example, Animal Biology offers more postgraduate study opportunities, but does not generally lead to professional certification as an agronomist. Students in Animal Science programs are strongly encouraged to pursue practical work experience options offered by their university.
