What do Physics students learn?Physics today generally concerns itself with scientific problems where the number of variables is small. Topics with many variables such as geophysics and atmospheric sciences have branched into their own disciplines, but physics departments themselves are primarily interested in classical, atomic (also known as optical or molecular), nuclear, plasma, and particle physics. The widespread use of computers has spawned yet another branch known as computational physics. Because of the recent connections between cosmology and elementary particle physics, astronomy and astrophysics have also remained closely related to physics, and many universities offer joint degrees in these disciplines or in a related discipline such as geophysics or engineering.
