What is Food Science?Food Science is a fairly new and multidisciplinary professional program that applies engineering and scientific principles to the production, processing, storage, handling, distribution, and evaluation of food.
What do Food Science students learn?Food science students receive a grounding in disciplines such as chemistry, economics, microbiology and engineering. Students also take courses specific to food science such as safe packaging and storage, pest management, cereal technology, dairy, meat and poultry processing, flavor chemistry, and food plant sanitation. Quite different from nutrition programs, it deals with the steps involved in taking food as a raw product from the farm to the finished product on store shelves.
